It's interesting to see the way the things change in the world - and often to improve. I grew up during the cold war. The Soviets and the rest of the Warsaw Pact were the enemy.

This past week NATO formally invited seven new members to join: ex-Warsaw Pact members Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia; ex-Yugoslav republic Slovenia; and the Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which were under Soviet occupation until a little over a decade ago. The Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland are already NATO members, and East Germany was absorbed into the alliance when it unified with the West.

And people made fun of President Reagan when call said of the Berlin wall: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
