A student at George Washington Universitywrites in her weblog about seeing the, now so predictable, protesters at the recent World Bank meeting in Washington D.C.
Oh good god, I just can't stand leftist umbrella protests. You know, back in the day, the chant was: "HELL NO WE WON'T GO" or "HEY HEY LBJ HOW MANY KIDS DID YOU KILL TODAY?" ...now the chant is: "HEY HEY, HO HO, THIS PENIS PARTY WAR-MONGERING NON-DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED SON OF A BUSH OIL-GRUBBING JEW-LOVING GAP-CLOTHES-WEARING WYMYN-OPPRESSING IRAQ-BOMBING GAIA-RAPING MINORITY-OPPRESSING MONEY-LOVING IMPERIALIST (oh and the IMF and World Bank too) PARTY'S GOT TO GO!" It's not that people should be confined to one issue... but then again, it would make protesting easier. The whole "umbrella" protest just becomes a big useless leftist party, and it's hard to take seriously.
She goes on to talk about the reception they got from the protesters - pretty rude and obnoxious.
It reminded me of my first political rally. Jimmy Carter came to Toledo for a campaign rally at the local mall. My friend, Bob Rusk, and I picked up some Ford/Dole posters and headed down there. It's an understatement to say we were not warmly welcomed. The local UAW goon squid came very close to starting a fight with our small group of kids. I mean, here was a small group of high school freshman (chess team and band geeks, OK) and they spent all their time hurling expletives at us and trying to shove us out of the mall. Yes, they were great defenders of free speech. I'll never forget their hypocrisy.
