Kathleen and I were out surveying the herb garden this evening. In amongst the parsley there were a few caterpillars. They looked like butterfly caterpillars, but we didn't know what kind. So off to Google and we quickly identified them as Black Swallowtail Caterpillars (Papilio polyxenes Fabricius). One of the web sites listed the common name of the caterpillar as Parsley Worm. Fitting since they were munching on our italian parsley.
We had seen both Black and Tiger Swallowtails flitting about the garden a few weeks earlier. I guess they liked our garden enough to raise a family there.
We'll let these caterpillars eat their fill of the parsley - we have plenty - and hopefully we'll see more Black Swallowtails in the garden next year.

Also on the natural history front, last night I was in the front yard with our dog Winnie. She was sniffing about, as is her habit, and I heard an owl hooting off in the distance. Consulting our Birds of Ohio we quickly identified it as a Great Horned Owl. It's hooting pattern is hoo hoo-hoo hoooo. That was the first Great Horned Owl we've come across here in Lewis Center.
Last year we heard a Barred Owl in the back yard. It's hoot sounds like: "Who cooks for you?" Sometime I'd really like to see one of these creatures!
