Summer unofficially ends this weekend. Guess I can't wear white again 'til next year :-)
Lots of signs of the end of one season and the beginning of the next:
- We bought our mums today for a splash of fall color in the garden.
-
The golden rod shows signs of blooming. We have a cultivated variety in the perennial bed called "fireworks." It's a well deserved name.
-
A few trees in our woods have some leaves turning. It will be a while before the serious fall color, but the hints are there of the big changes to come.
-
The air conditioner isn't running at night any more. I'm sure we'll have another hot spell or two, but "good sleeping weather" has returned.
-
The kids are back in school.
-
I even saw some V's of geese flying around. They weren't flying south - yet. But they seem to be getting restless.
Fall was always my favorite season as a kid. I really enjoyed the cooler weather after suffering through a hot summer - there was no air conditioning in our house back in those days. Playing in the fallen leaves was good fun too.
In college I really enjoyed the full glory of the New England color season (even if I did live 30 miles from New England). I recall one glorious day in October when I drove into the mountains of Vermont and western Massachusetts. Sunny. Cool. Dazzling.
Nothing like that happens in San Jose. A few trees change color. Slowly. Anywhere between October and Christmas. It's certainly not the same.
Autumn in Lewis Center isn't quite the same as in Vermont, but it's pretty good. Our back yard is filled with ash trees that are quite nice in their fall colors. My only complaint is that they are nearly the first trees to turn color and drop their leaves. They're over too soon. So I planted sugar maples in the front yard. They are still too small for a grand show, but do show promise. Ten years from now they will be wonderful.
